A Success Story in Airfreight Resilience

In the fast-paced world of airfreight, peak season often transforms into a high-stakes challenge. Capacity constraints, delays, and overwhelmed staff can jeopardize service quality and customer satisfaction. This was precisely the scenario faced by our team shortly after taking over airfreight operations in Hong Kong and the rest of Southern China. The task at hand was nothing short of monumental: restructure a system on the brink of collapse to ensure customer contentment in Europe and the USA.

To address these issues head-on, we embarked on a comprehensive overhaul of our airfreight department. This included a complete revamp of our documentation, information flow, and operational workflows. We understood that a fragmented system could no longer meet the rigorous demands of peak season. By streamlining processes and improving communication channels, we laid the foundation for a more resilient operation.

One of our critical moves was securing block space agreements with all available carriers, focusing on routes to Europe and transpacific destinations in North America. This strategic decision allowed us to manage capacity more effectively, ensuring that our shipments were prioritized and delays were minimized. To further bolster our capabilities, we arranged weekly charter operations during peak times, utilizing B747 Freighters and Antonov 124 aircraft to clear the burgeoning backlogs. These measures were instrumental in maintaining smooth operations and keeping our commitments to customers intact.

Another pivotal enhancement was the establishment of a centralized booking control tower. Through a joint booking platform, we could unify our staff's efforts in managing bookings, negotiating rates and handling contracts. This new system brought about significant efficiency gains, including optimized interfaces with our offices and local agents, which reduced misunderstandings and operational failures. The result was a remarkable over USD 10 million in savings during the peak season, underscoring the financial and operational impact of these improvements.

The success of these initiatives was driven by the exceptional cooperation of the entire HK Airfreight Team with their team leader for Hong Kong and Southern China. With expertise and visionary approach we were managing  block space agreements, which not only secured significant airline incentives but also cultivated a culture of excellence and customer-centricity within this team. The ability to navigate the complexities of peak season with resilience and dedication set a new standard for performance.

Key was also the orchestration of chartering of cargo planes with remarkable innovation, including the historic achievement of securing the first AN124 from Macao Airport. This milestone highlighted the necessary commitment to pushing boundaries and delivering excellence under pressure.

Gustav Zschiesche, President Panalpina WT China, ret., and former COO of Panalpina Europe, praised Tomas's leadership. "Werner Tomas embodies extraordinary leadership," Zschiesche remarked. "His management of block space agreements and innovative solutions during peak season exemplify his unwavering commitment to excellence. Tomas's ability to consistently deliver top performance amidst challenging conditions speaks volumes about his dedication and skill."

In conclusion, the successful restructuring of our airfreight operations during peak season is a testament to the power of strategic planning, innovative solutions, working with the greatest airfreight department in the world and leadership skills. Through a combination of operational enhancements and strong management, we not only navigated a potentially disruptive period but also set new benchmarks for efficiency and customer satisfaction in the airfreight industry.
